A Grandmother's Phone Test Changes the Invitation
An illustrative planning story about testing an invitation with an older relative. This fictional example explores readability and guest choice; it does not report a real customer's result.
The situation
A couple loves the opening animation on their draft website. In a family trial, a grandmother watches the animation but cannot locate the reception time. She assumes the small map icon is decorative and asks a relative to read the address aloud.
The planning decision
The couple asks her to try again without anyone taking the phone. Her pauses reveal the useful changes: a plain-text event card near the top, stronger contrast and a button labelled “Open reception map”. Music stays optional, and the page includes a telephone confirmation route.
The useful detail
The test is about tasks, not whether she likes the colour palette. Can she name the date, find the arrival time, open directions and explain how to reply? The family also prepares a matching short text message for relatives who prefer not to use the site.
What to borrow
Test with a person who has not helped design the invitation, on their own device where possible. Keep the emotional introduction, but make essential information easy to reach. A successful redesign would let the guest complete the task with less assistance; admiration for the artwork alone would not establish that.
