Asking for a Plus-One's Name Before Seating Is Finalised

If an invitation includes a plus-one, ask for their name politely and explain why you need it. Keep the request separate from whether an additional place is available; those are different host decisions.

Check the original invitation

Confirm that the household was offered a plus-one before requesting a name. If it was not, let the host handle the additional-guest question privately. A form field should not accidentally suggest that every attendee may bring someone extra.

Send a simple request

“We are preparing the reception seating and welcome list. Could you please send your invited guest's preferred name by [date]? If their plans are still uncertain, just let us know.” Ask for pronunciation or spelling only if useful for an agreed place card or announcement.

Update the right record

Attach the name to the existing invitation rather than counting them twice. Check any linked meal choice or seating requirement with the guest and share only the information relevant helpers need. If the name changes later, revise place cards and the welcome list together. Keep public displays focused on seating guidance, without exposing contact details or private RSVP notes.
