Uttar Pradesh's Mukhyamantri Samuhik Vivah Yojana (Chief Minister's Mass Marriage Scheme) is in the middle of its busiest stretch of the year. Ceremonies are being held across districts as the wedding season opens, and on 31 October 2026 ETV Bharat reported that 108 couples, including 10 Muslim couples whose nikah was performed, were married on the first day of a four-day programme in Bidhnu, Kanpur.

The scheme also changed in October 2026. The total assistance stays at Rs 1 lakh per couple, but the way it is split has been revised, with more money going straight to the bride's bank account. This guide explains what changed, who is eligible, which documents are needed, how to apply, and a practical checklist for families attending a mass wedding with their relatives.

Disclaimer: This is general information compiled from news reports and official statements available on 31 October 2026. Scheme rules, dates and documents can change and may be applied differently by district. Always confirm with your Block Development Office, Nagar Palika or District Social Welfare Office before applying.

What changed in October 2026

According to NDTV India and a PTI report carried by ABP Live (24 October 2026), the Rs 1 lakh per couple is now split as follows:

ComponentEarlier split (from FY 2025-26)Revised split (reported October 2026)
Direct transfer to the bride's bank accountRs 60,000Rs 64,000
Wedding gift items (household items and other gifts)Rs 25,000Rs 21,000
Ceremony arrangements (pandal, food, tent and similar)Rs 15,000Rs 15,000
TotalRs 1,00,000Rs 1,00,000

NDTV India reports that the change replaces the silver payal (anklets) and bichhiya (toe rings), worth about Rs 4,000, that were part of the gift items, with the same amount added to the bride's direct transfer.

Background: the state raised the assistance from Rs 51,000 to Rs 1 lakh per couple from the 2025-26 financial year, and raised the family income ceiling from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh a year (PTI, 24 April 2025). The UP Budget for 2026-27, as reported by The Economic Times, proposed an allocation of Rs 750 crore for the scheme.

How big is the scheme this year?

Social Welfare Department Director Sanjeev Singh told PTI (as reported by ABP Live on 24 October 2026) that in FY 2026-27:

  • 1,16,668 applications had been received,
  • 34,845 had been approved,
  • 11,679 were found ineligible on verification,
  • the year's target was 72,540 couples, and
  • 28,833 couples had already been married under the scheme.

The ineligible figure matters. Verification is real, and applications with wrong income, age or residence details are rejected.

Who is eligible

Based on the conditions reported by NDTV India and the state's earlier announcements:

  • Income: total annual family income of Rs 3 lakh or less.
  • Age: the bride must be at least 18 and the groom at least 21 on the date of marriage.
  • Residence: the bride must be a permanent resident of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Categories: the scheme covers poor families from SC, ST, OBC, minority and general categories. Applications from SC, ST and OBC families need a caste certificate.
  • Remarriage: widows and divorced women are included.
  • Venue: the marriage must take place at a government-organised mass wedding ceremony. A private wedding at home does not qualify under this scheme.

UP also runs a separate Shadi Anudan (marriage grant) scheme for daughters of poor families, which works differently. Do not confuse the two; ask your Social Welfare Office which one fits your situation.

Documents to keep ready

The documents commonly listed for the application are:

  • Aadhaar of the bride and groom (used for e-KYC by OTP).
  • Age proof such as a birth certificate, Class 10 marksheet or school leaving certificate. Aadhaar alone may not be accepted as proof of age; see the note on registration below.
  • Income certificate issued by the Tehsildar.
  • Residence (domicile) certificate.
  • Caste certificate, where applicable.
  • The bride's bank passbook, showing account number and IFSC clearly. The account should be in the bride's own name and linked to Aadhaar for direct transfer.
  • Passport-size photographs of the bride and groom.
  • For remarriage: the relevant death certificate or divorce decree.

Make two photocopy sets, sign each page where asked, and keep the originals in a single folder.

How to apply

Online: NDTV India reports that applications are made on the official portal, cmsvy.upsdc.gov.in, using Aadhaar-based e-KYC for both the bride and groom. You fill in personal, income, caste and residence details and the bride's bank details, upload scanned documents, submit, and print the acknowledgement. (The portal was slow to load when we checked on 31 October 2026; try again at off-peak hours rather than paying anyone to "speed it up".)

Verification: after applying online, take the printout and photocopies of documents to your Block Office (rural) or Nagar Palika or Nagar Nigam office (urban) for physical verification. NDTV India reports this should be done 15 to 45 days before the planned ceremony date, and a block officer quoted by NDTV advised starting the process 20 days to a month before the season's ceremonies.

Offline: forms are available free at the Block Development Office, Gram Panchayat Secretary, Nagar Palika office or the District Social Welfare Office. Submit with photocopies and always take a receipt.

Help: NDTV India lists the state helpline 14568 for questions and complaints. You can also visit the District Social Welfare Officer at the Vikas Bhawan in your district headquarters.

Ceremony dates are decided by the district administration. Your block or Nagar Palika office will tell you the date and venue allotted to you.

Lessons from the Kanpur ceremony

ETV Bharat's 31 October 2026 report from Bidhnu, Kanpur, is a useful reality check for families:

  • Verification problems draw attention. The report raised questions after a couple who had reportedly married earlier went through the rituals again at the event. Re-marrying under the scheme to claim benefits is not an eligibility loophole; families should expect checks and should not attempt it.
  • Weather and queues. The main rituals were held in a waterproof pandal, but couples queuing for gifts were caught in heavy rain. Carry an umbrella or a plastic cover for documents and clothes.
  • Dress is a choice. Some brides arrived in western clothes. The Chief Development Officer told ETV Bharat that couples can wear clothes of their choice and there is no legal restriction, while adding that participants would be encouraged to wear traditional attire at future events.

Marriage registration after the ceremony

A mass wedding is a marriage ceremony, but registration is a separate step. Ask the organisers whether registration is being arranged at or after the event. If not, register the marriage yourselves at the Sub-Registrar office.

Uttar Pradesh changed its marriage registration practice in 2026 after an Allahabad High Court order on age verification: Aadhaar is now treated as proof of identity and address, not proof of age, and a birth certificate or school certificate is needed for age. Our explainer on why Aadhaar is no longer accepted as age proof for marriage registration in UP covers what to carry.

A family checklist for the day

One week before

  • Confirm the date, venue and reporting time with the block or Nagar Palika office, in writing or by SMS if possible.
  • Ask how many family members may accompany each couple and whether they need passes. Limits vary by event.
  • Check that the bride's bank account is active and Aadhaar-linked, so the direct transfer is not delayed.

Folder to carry

  • Application acknowledgement and verification receipt.
  • Photocopies of Aadhaar, age proof, income and residence certificates, and the bank passbook page.
  • Two passport-size photographs each.
  • A pen, a plastic folder and the phone number of the official in charge.

On the day

  • Reach on time; mass ceremonies follow a fixed schedule for many couples.
  • Keep one family member responsible for documents and one for the gift items.
  • Count and check the gift items before leaving, and keep any receipt or list you are given.
  • Carry water, snacks for elders and children, and rain cover.

After the day

  • Watch for the SMS or bank credit of the direct transfer. If it does not arrive, contact the District Social Welfare Office or the 14568 helpline with your application number.
  • Complete marriage registration if it was not done at the venue.

Inviting your relatives to a mass wedding

Many families still want their relatives present. Keep the invitation simple and accurate, because guest numbers may be limited and the venue is shared with many couples.

A short WhatsApp message works well:

"Namaste! Priya and Rahul's wedding will take place at the Mukhyamantri Samuhik Vivah ceremony on [date] at [venue], [town]. Please reach by [time]. Space for family is limited, so we are inviting close family only. Venue location: [map link]. For any help, call [name, number]."

Tips:

  • Share an exact map pin. Mass ceremonies are often held at government grounds, guest houses or community halls that relatives may not know. See how to share a venue location through a WhatsApp invite.
  • Say clearly if numbers are limited, so relatives are not turned away at the gate.
  • Do not promise a meal unless the organisers have confirmed that family members will be served.
  • Plan your own small get-together at home afterwards if you want to host a larger circle.

A free WhatsApp message is enough for most families. If you want something more personal for relatives living far away, a simple digital invitation, such as those on LoveSolutions, can carry the date, venue map and a family contact number in one link.

Beware of middlemen

  • The application and forms are free. No official fee is charged to apply.
  • Do not pay anyone who promises guaranteed selection, a faster transfer or a "better" date.
  • Never share your Aadhaar OTP or bank details with anyone other than the official process.
  • If someone asks for money, note their name and number and report it to the District Social Welfare Office.

Frequently asked questions

How much money does the UP mass marriage scheme give in 2026?

The total remains Rs 1 lakh per couple. As reported in October 2026, Rs 64,000 goes directly to the bride's bank account, Rs 21,000 is spent on gift items and Rs 15,000 on ceremony arrangements.

What is the income limit for the Samuhik Vivah Yojana?

The total annual family income must be Rs 3 lakh or less. The limit was raised from Rs 2 lakh in 2025.

Can we get the money if we marry privately at home?

No. The scheme applies only to marriages at government-organised mass wedding ceremonies.

Can widows and divorced women apply?

Yes, remarriage of widows and divorced women is included, subject to the other conditions.

Where do we complain if the money does not arrive?

Contact your District Social Welfare Office or the state helpline 14568 with your application number.
