Counting Birthday Return Gifts Without Overordering
Return-gift counts work best when they follow confirmed children rather than the total number of people at the party. Keep adults, invited children and approved siblings separate so the calculation is transparent.
Build the count
For each household, record the number of children attending and whether an additional sibling has been confirmed. If the gifts differ by age group, collect only the age information needed for that decision. Do not infer that every adult reply represents one child.
Work through a small example
If six households confirm one child each and two households confirm two children each, the confirmed child count is ten. Accompanying adults do not add to that gift total. Any spare gifts are a separate host decision based on likely changes and budget, not an unexplained increase in the attendance record.
Prepare discreetly
Keep labelled gifts or age categories out of public guest lists if they reveal children's details. Tell the distribution helper how to handle a last-minute guest kindly. Do not make a child explain why their household was not on a spreadsheet. Recheck counts after the RSVP deadline and before ordering personalised items that cannot easily be reassigned.
