Birthday Invitation Wording: Should Parents Stay or Drop Off?
A child's party invitation should tell parents whether an accompanying adult is expected to stay. Do not leave families to infer supervision arrangements from the child's age or the type of venue.
Confirm the host's plan
Decide who will supervise, where adults can wait and whether the venue has any relevant entry rules. For young children, clear adult arrangements are especially important. Describe the plan you have actually made rather than using a generic party template.
Choose direct wording
For a stay-with-child party: “Please join your child for the celebration; we look forward to hosting one accompanying adult.” For an arranged drop-off format: “Please contact [host] before confirming so we can explain arrival, supervision and pickup arrangements.” Use wording that matches your event and avoid suggesting an unsupervised drop-off is acceptable.
Record the right headcount
Ask for children and accompanying adults separately in the RSVP. Confirm pickup contacts privately where needed, and avoid publishing children's contact details or attendance lists. If siblings may join, state that separately. Clear wording helps parents decide whether the party works for their family and gives the host a more accurate catering and space plan.
