Changing your surname after the wedding sounds like one form. In practice it is a small project that touches Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank accounts, voter ID, your employer, insurance, investments and a dozen apps. Done in the wrong order, it creates the classic Indian paperwork trap: your PAN says one name, your Aadhaar another, and your bank refuses to update either until the other matches.

This guide walks through the process in a sensible order, using what the official portals say as of late October 2026. It also covers the choice many couples now make first: whether to change your name at all.

Important: This is general information, not legal advice. Government document rules change, and local offices sometimes ask for extra papers. Always check the current requirements on the official portal (uidai.gov.in, the Protean or UTIITSL PAN pages, passportindia.gov.in, voters.eci.gov.in) before you apply, and never pay agents for forms that are free.

First decision: do you need to change your name?

There is no law in India that requires a woman to change her surname after marriage. Many women keep their birth name, some add the spouse's surname, some use the new name socially but keep documents unchanged, and a growing number of couples simply do nothing on paper.

Keeping your existing name is often the lowest-effort option, especially if you:

  • have degrees, professional registrations, publications or a business in your current name;
  • hold investments, property or loans that would all need updating;
  • are an NRI or plan to move abroad soon, where a mismatch between Indian and foreign documents causes delays.

What you can still do without changing your name:

  • Add your spouse's name to your passport using a marriage certificate or a joint photo declaration (more on this below). This does not change your surname.
  • Use the marriage certificate as proof of relationship for visas, nominations or insurance.

If you do want to change your name, the rest of this guide is your checklist.

Three kinds of name change (they are treated differently)

What you wantExampleWhat officials usually treat it as
Surname change after marriagePriya Sharma becomes Priya MehtaA marriage-linked change; marriage certificate is the key document
Adding a surnamePriya Sharma becomes Priya Sharma MehtaUsually treated like a marriage-linked change, but check each office
Full or first-name changePriya Sharma becomes Riya MehtaA standard name change; Gazette notification is generally needed

The examples are illustrative. The distinction matters because most of the easy routes below apply only to a surname change following marriage. The Passport Seva document advisor, for example, says that for a full change of name after marriage, the standard name change procedure should be followed. UIDAI's list of supporting documents similarly asks for a Gazette notification for full name or first-name change requests.

Decide the exact spelling before you start (the same discipline that helps when writing family names correctly on a wedding invite). Write it down once, including spacing and whether there is a middle name, and use that exact string everywhere. A single extra space or a spelling variation between documents is the most common reason applications bounce.

Step 0: Register your marriage and get the certificate

Almost every route starts with a government-issued marriage certificate. A temple certificate or a photo is not the same thing.

  • Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist couples usually register under the Hindu Marriage Act through the state's marriage registration system (often the Sub-Registrar or the local body, depending on the state).
  • Couples marrying under the Special Marriage Act receive a certificate from the Marriage Officer after the notice period and solemnisation.
  • Other personal laws and states have their own registration routes, and some states have compulsory registration rules.

Practical tips:

  • Ask for more than one certified copy. You will hand copies to several offices, and some will want to see the original.
  • Check that both names, dates and addresses are spelled exactly as on your existing ID. Correcting a marriage certificate later is slower than checking it at the counter.
  • Keep a clear scanned PDF. Most online portals accept uploads within a small file-size limit, so keep one compressed copy handy.

State rules on what is accepted as age and identity proof for registration also change. In some states, for example, Aadhaar alone has not been accepted as proof of age (see our note on Aadhaar and age proof for marriage registration). Check your state's current list before the appointment.

The order that avoids mismatch problems

There is no official sequence, but this order works well because each step gives you a document the next office will accept:

  1. Marriage certificate (Step 0)
  2. Aadhaar
  3. PAN
  4. Bank accounts and KYC
  5. Passport (now, or at your next renewal)
  6. Voter ID and driving licence
  7. Employer, EPFO, insurance, investments and everything else

Why Aadhaar before PAN? Many systems in India now match PAN details against Aadhaar. Under the revised PAN process that applies from 1 April 2026, explainers of the new rules describe the name on PAN being matched with Aadhaar details. If Aadhaar is updated first, the PAN request has a matching record to check against. Banks, in turn, often update KYC once PAN and Aadhaar agree.

Step 1: Aadhaar

What UIDAI says (as of October 2026):

  • UIDAI's Aadhaar handbook states that name can be updated twice in a lifetime. Date of birth and gender can be updated once.
  • For a name update, you need a proof of identity (POI) document with photograph from UIDAI's list of acceptable documents. That list includes a marriage certificate with photograph issued by the State or Central Government as a POI document.
  • For full name or first-name changes, the same list asks you to submit the Gazette notification of the new name.
  • If you have already used up your updates, UIDAI describes an exception process: place the update request at an Aadhaar enrolment centre, then contact UIDAI (helpline 1947 or the official email) with your update request number and ask for an exception update. It is reviewed by the regional office.

How to do it:

  1. Book an appointment at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre through the official UIDAI site, or walk in where allowed.
  2. Carry your Aadhaar, the marriage certificate (original and copy), and one more photo ID if you have it.
  3. Ask the operator to update the name, and if you are also moving house, the address at the same visit. Updating several fields together counts as a single update for the fee.
  4. Keep the acknowledgement slip with the update request number and track it online.

Some minor name corrections can be requested online through UIDAI's self-service portal with your registered mobile number. A marriage-related surname change often needs a document check, so an enrolment centre visit is the reliable route. Check the current fee on uidai.gov.in. UIDAI publishes maximum charges, and the form itself is free.

Tip: Your Aadhaar address shows a "C/o" (care of) field. It is optional. You do not have to put your spouse's name there.

Step 2: PAN

From 1 April 2026, PAN corrections use the new PAN CR-01 form for individuals ("Request for Changes or Correction in PAN Data"), specified by the Income Tax Department under the Income-tax Rules, 2026. Your PAN number does not change. Only the name on record and the card change.

Proof of the change (as listed by Protean's additional-documents note for change or correction):

For married women, proof indicating the change from old name to new name can be any of:

  • marriage certificate;
  • marriage invitation card;
  • publication of the name change in the official Gazette;
  • copy of passport showing husband's name;
  • certificate from a gazetted officer.

For anyone other than married women (for example, a husband who takes his wife's surname, or a couple creating a joint surname), the same note lists the Gazette publication or a gazetted officer's certificate.

The marriage invitation card on that list surprises many couples. If you plan to rely on it, keep a physical printed card, not just the WhatsApp version. It is not clear that a screenshot or a digital invite printout will be accepted, so ask at the PAN centre or check the current guidelines first. The marriage certificate is the safest proof.

How to do it:

  1. Apply through the official PAN service providers (Protean or UTIITSL), online or at a PAN centre.
  2. Fill your father's name as before. Your father's name stays in the PAN record; a husband's name is not entered there.
  3. Enter the new name exactly as it now appears on Aadhaar.
  4. Upload or submit the proof of identity, address and the proof of change.
  5. Keep the acknowledgement number. Once the update is done, an updated e-PAN can be downloaded from the official provider.

Watch out for fake "PAN 2.0" links. A new unified PAN system has been announced by the government, but a "PAN 2.0 card" is not something to apply for through links that arrive by SMS or email. Use only the official websites.

Step 3: Bank accounts and KYC

Banks set their own processes, but most will ask for:

  • a written or online request to change the name;
  • the marriage certificate (and sometimes the updated Aadhaar and PAN);
  • fresh signature specimens if your signature is changing.

Things to plan for:

  • Cheque books and debit cards will be reissued in the new name. Do not destroy old cheques until the new ones arrive and pending payments have cleared.
  • Joint accounts, FDs and lockers may need both holders to sign.
  • UPI handles and wallets usually pick up the name from the bank, but some apps show the old name until KYC is refreshed.
  • If you are moving cities, consider whether to move the account branch at the same time to avoid two rounds of KYC.

Step 4: Passport

You do not have to rush to change your passport. Many couples wait until the next renewal, as long as upcoming travel is booked in the name currently on the passport. Your air ticket name must match the passport you travel on. For a honeymoon, book tickets in the old name if your passport is still in the old name.

What Passport Seva says (re-issue document advisor, read 29 Oct 2026):

  • For a change of surname by a woman applicant following marriage: marriage certificate or a joint photo declaration signed by both husband and wife (Annexure J).
  • For adding a spouse's name to the passport: marriage certificate or Annexure J.
  • For a full change of name after marriage: follow the standard name change procedure.

Annexure J is a declaration with a latest joint photograph of husband and wife, self-attested, and signed by both. It is useful when the marriage certificate is still in process, but check the current format on passportindia.gov.in.

How to do it:

  1. Apply for re-issue of passport on the Passport Seva portal and choose the change of particulars.
  2. Book a PSK or POPSK appointment.
  3. Carry the old passport, the marriage certificate or Annexure J, and your updated address proof if the address is changing.
  4. Check your jurisdictional passport office page for any extra documents it asks for.

Step 5: Voter ID and driving licence

  • Voter ID: Corrections to entries in the electoral roll are requested through the Election Commission's voter services portal (Form 8 is the form for shifting residence or correction of entries). If you are moving to your spouse's city, you can usually do the shift and name correction together.
  • Driving licence: Changes are made through the state transport department, often via the Parivahan portal, followed by a visit to the RTO in many states. Requirements vary by state.

Step 6: Employer, EPFO, insurance and investments

Once your core IDs match, work through the rest. A simple list:

WhereWhat to updateUsually needs
Employer HR and payrollName, bank account, nomineeMarriage certificate, updated PAN
EPFO / UANName correction, nominee (add spouse)Request via employer or EPFO member portal; matching Aadhaar and PAN
Health and life insurancePolicyholder name, add spouse, nomineeInsurer's endorsement form, marriage certificate
Mutual funds and dematName change in KYC recordsUpdated PAN, request through registrar or broker
Property, loans, vehicleOwnership records, loan accountLender or registrar's process; may take longer
Degree and professional bodiesUsually not changed; keep a marriage certificate copy to link namesBody's own rules
Mobile number, utilities, appsAccount nameSimple request; low priority

Nominee updates are just as important as name changes. Adding your spouse as nominee on bank accounts, PF and insurance takes minutes and avoids a lot of trouble later.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Different spellings on different documents. Decide the spelling once and stick to it.
  2. Starting with the bank. Most banks want to see updated Aadhaar or PAN first.
  3. Changing the passport just before travel. Wait until after the trip if timing is tight.
  4. Using your husband's name as "father's name" on PAN. The PAN record keeps your father's name.
  5. Wasting an Aadhaar name update. You only get two in a lifetime before the exception process. Check spellings before the operator submits.
  6. Paying agents for free forms. UIDAI and the PAN providers publish official fees. Use only official sites.
  7. Forgetting the nominee. Update nominee details along with your name.

Document pack to keep ready

Make one folder (physical and on your phone) with:

  • marriage certificate (original and three or four certified copies);
  • updated Aadhaar (download the latest after the update);
  • updated e-PAN;
  • old passport and, if needed, signed Annexure J with joint photo;
  • a few passport-size photos with the current look;
  • one printed wedding invitation card, kept safely (useful as supporting proof for some offices);
  • a one-page note with the exact new name spelling, Aadhaar update number and PAN acknowledgement number.

Many couples who use a wedding website or digital invitation also keep one printed card (our guide to whether a wedding website can replace a printed card covers when a few prints still make sense), the final PDF and the date and venue page together. That small archive is a pleasant keepsake, and it is sometimes useful paperwork too.

Frequently asked questions

Is it compulsory to change my surname after marriage in India? No. There is no legal requirement to change your name. You can keep your birth name, add a surname or change it.

Can I change my name in Aadhaar with just a marriage certificate? For a surname change after marriage, UIDAI lists a government-issued marriage certificate with photograph as an acceptable proof of identity. Full or first-name changes need a Gazette notification. Check the current UIDAI list before your visit.

How many times can I change my name in Aadhaar? UIDAI's handbook says the name can be updated twice. Beyond that, there is an exception process through the UIDAI helpline and regional office.

Does my PAN number change after marriage? No. The PAN number stays the same. Only the name on record changes through the PAN CR-01 correction request.

Is a wedding invitation card accepted as proof for PAN name change? Protean's current list of proofs for married women includes a marriage invitation card, alongside the marriage certificate and other options. A printed card is safer than a digital copy, and the marriage certificate is the strongest proof.

Do I need a Gazette notification for a passport surname change after marriage? For a woman's surname change following marriage, Passport Seva lists a marriage certificate or the joint photo declaration (Annexure J). A full name change follows the standard procedure.

Can a husband take his wife's surname or can a couple choose a joint surname? Yes, but the shortcuts above are mostly written for married women. A man changing his surname, or anyone creating a new combined name, is usually asked for a Gazette publication or a gazetted officer's certificate. Check with each office.

Should I change my name before my honeymoon? Usually no. Travel on the passport you have, with tickets booked in that exact name, and update afterwards.
