Durga Puja 2026 is in full swing. Maha Saptami falls on Saturday 17 October, and Bijoya Dashami on Wednesday 21 October (Drik Panchang, Kolkata). Once the pandals come down and the Bijoya visits begin, many Bengali families turn to the next big date in the calendar: the Agrahayan wedding season.

This guide is for those families. It explains how a Bengali wedding card (biyer card or nimontron potro) is structured, gives paste-ready wording in formal sadhu bhasha and modern cholito bhasha with English versions, covers the separate bou bhaat card from the groom's side, and shows how to present late-night lagna times so that guests from outside Bengal arrive on the right night.

Please check before printing: Wording varies by family, district and community, and some families have used the same phrasing for generations. Treat the samples below as starting points, and ask an elder to read the final Bengali text. Wedding dates and lagnas must come from your family purohit.

Why the timing matters this year

In the Bengali calendar, Agrahayan 1433 begins on 18 November 2026 (bengalicalendar.com). Benimadhab Sil's Full Panjika 1433, as republished on benimadhabsilpanjika.com, lists these Agrahayan wedding dates:

Bengali dateEnglish dateDay
৪ঠা অগ্রহায়ণ21 November 2026Saturday
৭ই অগ্রহায়ণ24 November 2026Tuesday
৮ই অগ্রহায়ণ25 November 2026Wednesday
৯ই অগ্রহায়ণ26 November 2026Thursday
১৮ই অগ্রহায়ণ5 December 2026Saturday
২২শে অগ্রহায়ণ9 December 2026Wednesday
২৪শে অগ্রহায়ণ11 December 2026Friday
২৫শে অগ্রহায়ণ12 December 2026Saturday
২৬শে অগ্রহায়ণ13 December 2026Sunday

Two cautions:

  1. Panjikas do not all agree. Other online calendars publish noticeably different Agrahayan lists. Families who follow different almanacs may end up on different dates. Your purohit decides.
  2. Check the weekday yourself. The republished list above shows 11 December as a Wednesday; it is actually a Friday. A small slip like that, copied onto a card, sends guests to the wrong night.

With the first dates barely five weeks after Bijoya Dashami, the window between Puja and the wedding is short. That is why it pays to settle the wording now.

Sadhu or cholito, not both. Traditional cards use sadhu bhasha (হইয়াছে, করিলে, থাকিয়া). Modern cards use cholito (হয়েছে, করলে, থেকে). Mixing the two in one sentence is a classic error that Bengali teachers call guruchandali dosh, and older relatives will notice. Choose one register and keep it throughout.

Template 3: Bou bhaat card from the groom's family

The bride's family invites guests to the wedding; the groom's family sends a separate invitation for the bou bhaat and preetibhoj, usually held a day or two later at the groom's home or a hall.

Your presence with family and friends is warmly requested. Venue: [address]. With regards, [Host]."

(The bou bhaat date in this sample is illustrative. Fix your own date with the family.)

Short lines for the other functions

Many families add the smaller functions on an insert card or a digital page rather than the main card.

For guests from outside Bengal, add a one-line English note to each, as in the right-hand column.

Writing the lagna so nobody arrives on the wrong night

Bengali lagnas are often late at night, and the panjika format is unfamiliar to many guests. The republished Benimadhab Sil list gives, for example, a lagna on 7 Agrahayan (24 November) between 1:03 am and 3:22 am, and others well after 10 pm.

Panjika entries use the pattern "রাত্রি ঘ ৬:২৭ গতে ৮:৩২ মধ্যে", meaning after 6:27 pm and before 8:32 pm. That is clear to a Bengali elder and baffling to a colleague from Pune.

Four rules:

  1. Translate the window on English and digital versions: "Lagna between 6:27 pm and 8:32 pm."
  2. Name the night, not just the date, for after-midnight lagnas. "Lagna between 1:03 am and 3:22 am, on the night of Tuesday 24 November (early hours of Wednesday 25 November)." Families usually count it as the evening's wedding; guests' calendars do not.
  3. Separate arrival, dinner and lagna times. Many guests will come for the preetibhoj and leave before a late lagna. Say so gently: "Dinner from 8 pm. Close family will stay for the lagna."
  4. Put the Bengali date and the English date together on every version of the card, and check the weekday against a normal calendar.

Sending a Bijoya message that also prepares guests

Bijoya greetings are a natural moment to let people know a card is on its way, without sending it too early. Keep it light and do not lock details your purohit has not confirmed.

English: "Warm Bijoya greetings. With Ma's blessings, there's a happy occasion in our family this Agrahayan. The card will follow soon. Please keep the date in mind."

Most Bengali families now send both: a printed biyer card to elders and close relatives, and a digital version on WhatsApp to everyone else. A few points make the two work together:

  • Keep the printed card traditional, in full sadhu bhasha if that is the family's style. The digital version can use cholito and an English line beneath.
  • Use separate digital invitations or pages for the biye and the bou bhaat, since different families host them and guest lists differ. A wedding website from LoveSolutions or a similar platform can show each guest only the functions they are invited to.
  • Make the venue a tappable map link on the digital version; print the full address on the card.
  • Type in Unicode Bengali, so the text displays correctly when forwarded. Check that conjuncts such as প্রজাপতয়ে and কল্যাণীয়া render properly on a phone before sending.
  • Send one message per household, not into large groups, and follow up with elders by phone, as most families still expect.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing sadhu and cholito in the same sentence or card.
  • Copying a date from a website without checking the weekday or your family's panjika.
  • Giving only the Bengali date, leaving non-Bengali guests to convert it.
  • Listing a late-night lagna without naming the night, so guests arrive a day late.
  • Swapping কল্যাণীয়া and শ্রীমান, or misspelling the bride's or groom's name between the biye and bou bhaat cards.
  • Forgetting to tell guests the bou bhaat is a separate invitation from a different family, which leads to "which one are we invited to?" calls.

FAQ

What is written at the top of a Bengali wedding card? Usually "শ্রী শ্রী প্রজাপতয়ে নমঃ" (Shri Shri Prajapataye Namah), a salutation to Prajapati, often with a butterfly motif.

Who sends the bou bhaat card? The groom's family. The bride's family invites guests to the wedding itself.

Should a Bengali wedding card be in sadhu or cholito bhasha? Either works. Traditional printed cards use sadhu bhasha; modern and digital invitations often use cholito. Just do not mix them.

When are the Bengali wedding dates in Agrahayan 2026? One widely used panjika (Benimadhab Sil, as republished online) lists 21, 24, 25 and 26 November and 5, 9, 11, 12 and 13 December 2026. Other calendars differ, so confirm with your purohit.

How should I write a lagna that is after midnight? Give the time window and name the night: "between 1:03 am and 3:22 am, on the night of 24 November (early hours of 25 November)."

The Puja season ends with Bijoya, and for many families that is when the real wedding planning begins. Settle the wording early, check every date twice, and let the biyer card do what it has always done: invite people warmly, in the family's own voice.
