Checking a Wedding Invitation Received on WhatsApp

A message calling itself a wedding invitation is not proof that its attachment or link is safe. If the invitation is unexpected, verify it with the family using a contact method you already trust before opening it or following instructions.

Check whether the invitation makes sense

Do you recognise the couple, event and sender? If a familiar account sends an unusual invitation or request, confirm through a known phone number or another established contact. A recognisable profile alone is not enough to verify the message.

Look at the destination shown for a link. If it does not match what the family says they sent, pause. A polished page or a reassuring name should not replace confirmation.

Treat unrelated requests as a reason to stop

Be cautious if an invitation asks you to install an unfamiliar app, send money urgently or provide account credentials. Confirm any unusual requirement directly with the hosts before acting.

Never share your WhatsApp verification code to view an invitation. WhatsApp's official guidance says not to share that code with others. An RSVP should not need access to your messaging account.

Use the available reporting tools

If you believe the message is suspicious, stop engaging with it. WhatsApp provides blocking and reporting tools; its official suspicious-message guidance explains the recommended response.

Hosts can reduce confusion by sending a personal introduction, naming the event and explaining the destination of their link. That helps recipients verify the invitation; it does not guarantee technical safety.

Frequently asked questions

Does receiving an invitation from a saved contact guarantee safety?

No. If the content is unexpected or unusual, confirm it with the person through a known contact route.

Should an RSVP ask for my WhatsApp verification code?

No. Do not share the code. Contact the hosts separately to check what they intended to send.

How can hosts make their invitations easier to verify?

Name the hosts and couple, label links clearly and tell guests how to contact the family if anything seems unfamiliar.
